National Bowel Screening Program
A colonoscopy is a procedure used to examine the lower gastrointestinal tract for diagnostic and, in some cases, therapeutic purposes. During the procedure, a colonoscope—a long, flexible tube with a camera at the tip—is gently inserted through the rectum into the colon (large intestine). This allows the doctor to closely inspect the colon and perform specialised tasks, such as taking biopsies for further analysis or removing polyps (abnormal growths that may potentially develop into cancer).

A gastroscopy is a procedure in which an endoscope—a long, flexible tube with a camera at the tip—is used to examine the oesophagus (food pipe), stomach, and the first part of the small intestine. The tube is gently passed through the mouth to allow the doctor to visually inspect these areas and perform additional procedures, such as taking biopsies for further analysis.
